Circle of Magi

“Please, settle down. Some of you are children, but not all of you must act like it.

I am your First Enchanter, though some of you will come to call me Irving. It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the tower. Once it was known as Kinloch Hold, but it is better known today as home to the Circle of Magi here in Ferelden.

Please. Pay attention. For this is likely as pleasant and as relaxed a conversation as we will have together for some years to come.

Good. I have your attention.

I am not here to make you comfortable. Some of you were taken from your homes, torn from your families. I will not apologize for this; it is for the good of Thedas that this was done, in the hopes that your nascent gifts might be properly honed and controlled before the deadly temptations of power could take root.

The gentle armed and armored men and women you see around you are of the Order of Templars. Fear not, they are here only as a precaution. The templars have collected vials of your blood that will become your phylacteries, used to track you down should you fail to uphold the oaths you took this morning. Do not be afraid; as an apprentice of the tower you are unlikely to merit their attention. Heed your instructors and take responsibility for yourselves, and it may come to pass that you never have occasion to get to know one of our friends from the Chantry.

There are specific ways your time here can end. Which way occurs depends on you, your willpower, and your dedication to observing the rules of the Circle. Succeed and you may become a true mage, able to bend the world to your will and unlock the mysteries of life. There is much good that a mage can accomplish in their life, despite the challenges we face. Fail... and you may die, swiftly and mercifully.

I do not say this to frighten you, but to impress upon you the importance of the Circle’s duty. Your talent will draw demons to you in time, demons that will attempt to wrest control of your bodies. Should you lack the will to resist, you will become a force of chaos that you cannot even imagine. Even should that not occur, there are temptations that power can bring, temptations to indulge in forbidden arts that alone have been responsible for the greatest crimes in Thedas’s history. We cannot allow these things to happen. We will not.

The Circle is what allows you to practice your magic and not fear being hunted for what you are. You may come to hate this place, or you may come to think of it as the only true home you’ve ever had, a sanctuary in a world that will forever distrust you. Whichever case is true, you are now on a path that you cannot turn from. Your fate is entirely what you make of it.

I bid you welcome, young apprentices, to your destiny.”
