Caridin and Golems
From Dragon Age Wiki
When Caridin unveiled his first golem to the Assembly, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that he was a living Paragon. His timing couldn’t have been better. Caridin's golems slowly appeared on the front lines just as relentless waves of darkspawn threatened to break though into Orzammar herself. The golem's devastating power turned the tide. At King Valtor’s urging, Caridin started to produce golems more quickly. For the first time in ten generations, the dwarves had hopes beyond mere survival—they started to believe they could reclaim their former empire. For six glorious years, golems were produced and the fabled Legion of Steel was formed. This all-golem battalion devastated the darkspawn army without risking a single dwarven life. Victory seemed inevitable until Caridin suddenly disappeared, and with him went the knowledge of golemcraft. The court of King Valtor fell to panic, ordering several rescue operations that were destroyed by the ever-present darkspawn.
The last rescue operation was mounted by Queen Getha. She sent the entire Legion of Steel to reclaim Caridin and his secrets. With great fanfare, the Legion left Orzammar… but they were never heard from again. The Shaperate declared Caridin dead, extinguishing the last kindle of hope. Due to the incalculable loss of the Legion of Steel, Queen Getha was deposed.
The golems that remained have been carefully protected by the Shaper of Golems over the centuries. Each being irreplaceable, they are only called out in the direst of emergencies. Other dwarven smiths have sought to rediscover Caridin’s secrets, but to no avail.
